GAP Administration and McDonalds Children Foundation jointly implemented the “Project on Healthy Eyes and Success in Education” to improve the life quality of children in the GAP region with the contribution of universities, governorates and provincial directorates of health and education.
The project aimed at reducing the risk of poor school performance due to visual problems in children by identifying and treating visual disorders in primary school students attending schools in the GAP region.
Medical devices and equipment needed for eye screening were procured by the Children Foundation with the approval of relevant medical facilities and doctors and donated to a hospital upon the completion of the project.
The project budget covered the cost of lunches and transportation of personnel working for the project as well as eye drops used in screening.
Starting from 2003, the project was implemented in provinces of Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Batman, Şırnak (Cizre) and Şanlıurfa (second round) and screened over 137,000 children in 7 provinces. Children found with visual problems were diagnosed and given necessary treatment.
