Justification: Imbalance with respect to income levels of farmers engaged in irrigated farming and others on non-irrigated areas is increasing in the course of time.
Goal: Within the framework of sustainable farming techniques, identifying existing socio-economic status of population remaining out of irrigated areas in the GAP Region, their relations with natural and social environments and potentials to introduce and encourage new fields of income generation.
Objective: It is clear that there will be a significant increase in income of those parts of the GAP Region brought under irrigation. This, in turn, will lead to income disparities between those living in irrigated farming areas and others in non-irrigated areas. In order to prevent this disparity and to attain the goal of sustainable development by enhancing productivity and opportunities of employment in rural areas there is need to integrate all social groups in the project areas with the process of development and ensure that this development is equitable.
Activities Conducted: Presently there are pilot activities in the provinces of the region involving selected model farmers carried out in cooperation with Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. Activities include introduction of model orchards, high tunnel, grafting of wild trees, beekeeping, water products, on-contract stock breeding, fodder crop production and poultry farming.
